WOBURN, MA — A technology company in Woburn is expanding here as demand for the startup’s superconductor systems appears poised to grow.

Veir Inc. has its headquarters in a business complex at 3 Gill St. and plans to add space nearby at 45 Industrial Parkway. But because the company needs to enlarge loading-dock doors there beyond zoning limits, it had to get a special permit from the Woburn City Council.

The council approved the permit this month, with some minor conditions, according to the Daily Times Chronicle.

Veir is developing power transmission systems that use superconductors – materials that, unlike traditional copper cables, provide little or no resistance to electricity.

Launched in 2019, the company says its technology can greatly speed up the delivery of power, helping to meet huge demands for electricity created by the growth of data centers, AI and green-energy generators.

That demand is projected to increase by over 30% globally in the next two decades, according to Veir.

The private company raised $75 million in a second round of funding last year. Veir plans to use the new space to conduct a seven-month test of a transmission system prototype.

It's not clear if that will mean more jobs at Veir. But with new loading doors – roughly double the size of the existing ones – it will be able to move huge superconductor coils in and out of the building.
