Officials Identify Suspect Killed During Shootout With Police In Spencer

A 35-year-old man has died, and a Millbury police officer was hospitalized following the incident, according to officials.

SPENCER, MA — Officials have released the name of the suspect who died following an exchange of gunfire inside a dollar store at a shopping center in Massachusetts.

The suspect, later identified as 35-year-old Patrick Madison, died, and a Millbury police officer was injured after an incident at a Family Dollar on West Main Street in Spencer on Tuesday night, according to the Worcester County District Attorney's Office.

Madison worked for the City of Worcester's Department of Public Works, a city spokesperson told the Telegram and Gazette.

Spencer police responded to a 911 call on Main Street shortly after 5 p.m. on Tuesday. Officers arrived at the scene to find someone suffering from a gunshot wound, who was later taken to the hospital, the DA reported.

A short time later, Madison, who matched the suspect's description from the earlier incident, was located in the area of West Main Street.When officers approached him, he took out a firearm, and shots were fired, according to the DA.

The DA said Madison entered the nearby Family Dollar store, and police requested additional resources, including the Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council negotiator, SWAT Unit, Drone Unit, K-9 Unit, and the State Police Air Wing Unit. SWAT members went inside the store, and there was an exchange of gunfire, which resulted in injuries to a Millbury Police Officer and the death of Madison.

The officer was transported to the hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. Officials have not released the name of the officer who was shot.

"We ask that you keep the officer, the officer's family and fellow officers in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time," Millbury Police Chief Brian S. Lewos wrote in a social media post Tuesday.

The incident remains under investigation by State Police Detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney's Office, as well as by multiple State Police agencies and the Spencer Police Department.
