Worcester Declares Winter Weather Emergency, Announces Overflow Shelter
The city is expecting cold temperatures with wind chills as low as -20 degrees Fahrenheit, along with heavy snowfall of 18 to 25 inches.
WORCESTER, MA — The city has declared a Winter Weather Emergency effective at 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 23.
This comes ahead of a major winter storm that is expected to hit Massachusetts and much of the East Coast this weekend. Worcester is expecting cold temperatures with wind chills as low as -20 degrees Fahrenheit, along with heavy snowfall of 18 to 25 inches.

The city is opening an emergency winter overflow shelter and warming center at Worcester Technical High School, at 1 Officer Manny Familia Way, on Friday at 5 p.m. The facility will be open to the public until 3 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 26.
The city is asking residents to avoid city streets as of 6 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 25. There will also be a Declared Winter Parking Ban that will go into effect at 1 a.m. on Sunday. Municipal parking garages will be free for anyone who enters after 8 p.m. on Saturday.

Residents can use one of five municipal garages, including Major Taylor Garage at 30 Major Taylor Blvd., Federal Plaza Garage at 570 Main St., Pearl & Elm Garage at 20 Pearl St., Worcester Common Garage at 3 Eaton Place, and Union Station Garage at 225 Franklin St.
Towing and ticketing will be enforced by the city. Trash and recycling will also be delayed on Monday, and City Hall will be closed.
“Residents’ safety is my top priority,” said City Manager Eric D. Batista. “We ask that people practice patience as DPW crews work to keep the streets clear for emergency vehicles. Please remain off the streets unless travel is an emergency. City crews will be working tirelessly overnight and through Monday to ensure the safety of all."
