Worcester Man Accused Of Leaving Child In Locked Car At Walmart

The 40-year-old was charged with reckless endangerment of a child

WORCESTER, MA — A Worcester man was arrested Thursday after police said he left a small child inside a locked vehicle outside a Northborough Walmart.

Luis Fernando Lopez Veloez, 40, of Worcester, was charged with reckless endangerment of a child after Northborough police and fire responded around 4:06 p.m. Thursday to the Walmart on Otis Street for a report of a child left alone in a locked, parked vehicle, according to Police Chief Brian Griffin.

Police and firefighters found the vehicle and safely removed the child, officials said. The child was evaluated by EMS and taken to an area hospital.

Police later identified Lopez Veloez as the owner of the vehicle. Investigators determined he was shopping while the child was left inside the car, according to police.

The outside temperature was believed to be about 90 degrees at the time, police said.

Lopez Veloez was arrested without incident and was scheduled to be arraigned Friday in Westborough District Court. Northborough police credited public safety personnel and the bystander who called 911 for their quick actions.
