“Letting go means to come to the realization that some people are a part of your history, but not a part of your destiny.”~ Steve Maraboli
Mental Attitude: One Cause of Tourette Syndrome Found. Researchers have confirmed that a rare genetic mutation may cause some cases of Tourette syndrome. The mutation disrupts the production of histamine in the brain, which can be a cause of the tics and other abnormalities associated with the syndrome. This finding will likely lead to new therapies and treatments for the disorder. Neuron, January 2014
Health Alert: Pregnancy Exposure to BPA Raises Prostate Cancer Risk in Male Offspring. A recent study on mice reveals a higher risk for prostate cancer when a male fetus is exposed to bispheonol A (BPA) at the same levels pregnant human females are normally exposed to. BPA is a plasticizer found in water bottles, soup can liners, and paper receipts which is nearly impossible to avoid. Dr. Gail Prins, professor of physiology and director of the andrology laboratory at the UIC College of Medicine, adds, "Our research provides the first direct evidence that exposure to BPA during development, at the levels we see in our day-to-day lives, increases the risk for prostate cancer in human prostate tissue." University of Illinois at Chicago, January 2014
Diet: Mediterranean Diet Lowers Risk for PAD! Previous research has shown that a Mediterranean-style diet can decrease a person's heart attack risk. Now, researchers say it can also lower a person's risk for peripheral artery disease (PAD). Compared to a low-fat diet, study participants who ate a Mediterranean-style diet supplemented with either extra-virgin olive oil or nuts were less likely to receive a PAD diagnosis during the nearly five-year follow-up period. The JAMA Network Journals. January 2014
Exercise: Metabolism-Friendly Molecule Found! Researchers have recently discovered a molecule secreted by muscle cells during exercise called β-aminoisobutyric acid (BAIBA) that appears to affect metabolism in other organs and tissues. A study done on human participants found that BAIBA levels rise with physical activity and appear to help manage fasting blood sugar levels, insulin, triglycerides, total cholesterol, and other metabolic risk factors. Cell Metabolism, January 2014
Chiropractic: Bedwetting Reduced. A case study of a 14-year-old male with a history of continuous bedwetting responded to chiropractic adjustments and experienced a decrease in episodes. Journal of Manipulative Physiological Therapeutics. October 1989
Wellness/Prevention: New Blood Test Could Accurately Predict Heart Attack Risk. Researchers say they have a new blood test that may be able to predict if patients are at a high risk for a heart attack. According to the research, endothelial cells in the bloodstream are associated with ongoing heart attacks. The new test called HD-CEC can accurately detect circulating endothelial cells. The test is now ready to be used on patients who show symptoms of increased risk of heart attack, but have not yet suffered one. Physical Biology, January 2014
