Birmingham Expects to Name New Greenfield Principal This Month
Longtime principal Don Tobe announced his retirement earlier this month.

The Birmingham Public Schools district is searching for a new building principal for Greenfield Elementary after longtime Principal Don Tobe announced his retirement.
“It’s just the right time,” Tobe told Hometownlife.com. “I’m 64 and I’ve had the most blessed career that anyone could ever ask for. I’ve been principal at Greenfield Elementary for 28 years and it really feels like a family here.”

Tobe will continue in his role for the next several weeks to ensure a smooth transition for his successor.

In addition to his administrative duties, Tobe helped lead the district’s character education and diversity committees. Eleven of 13 schools in the Birmingham district are designated as National Schools of Character.
“It’s quite an achievement,” he said. “We have a lot of successful students graduating from Groves and Seaholm. And while we certainly expect them to do well professionally in life, what’s more important is who they are.”
Nerad said Tobe will be missed.
“He’s an exemplary person and an excellent principal,” Nerad said. “We’re all really sorry to see him go. He’s going to be missed.”
