Seaholm Student Reports 'Stranger Danger'

The Birmingham Police Department encourages parents to review general safety guidelines with their children.

A male Seaholm High School student reported an incident of stranger danger to school and police authorities around 11:45 a.m. Tuesday.

The student said was walking on Midvale near Cranbrook (at the back of Seaholm’s parking lot) when a red vehicle approached him, according to a news release. The male driver asked the student to get in the car with him and give him directions to the mall. After the student said no, the driver became angry and sped off.

The driver is described as a white male with an accent, possibly in his 60s with white/brownish hair and a scruffy beard with white whiskers. The car is described as an older rusty-red vehicle, but the make or model is not known.

The following guidelines are from the National Crime Prevention Council:

  • Know where you are going and the safest way to get there.
  • Always be cautious when walking or biking.
  • Avoid isolated areas and do not wear headphones or text while walking. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Walking around with a cell phone in sight can make you an easy target.
  • Always tell an adult where you are going and what time you’ll be back. Whenever possible, travel with a friend or group of friends.
  • If you think you are being followed, go to the nearest store or public place. If there isn’t a store or public area nearby, keep moving and don’t be afraid to yell for help or make other noise to draw attention to the situation.
  • Report anything suspicious to the police as quickly as possible and provide as much detail as you can.

Students are encouraged to call 911 to report suspicious circumstances. Anyone with information regarding today’s incident is instructed to contact Detective Kate Long at (248) 530-1771.
