Highlight Reel: Brother Rice Wins Inter-City Rivary, Groves Baseball Bounces Back

This week's top five moments in Birmingham sports, from Brother Rice lacrosse to Groves baseball.

  1. Country Day baseball pulls out a close one:  Frank Orlando's Yellowjackets opened the season on a positive note Thursday, beating Warren Woods Tower 7-6. The game was highlighted by three RBIs from Michael Azzopardi.
  2. Marian girls varsity soccer wins another:  The Catholic League isn’t easy, but the Marian girls make it look like it is. The Mustangs are going for a third straight championship this season, beating Bishop Foley 2-0 on Thursday with goals from Alexa Finger and Elizabeth Tresnak. Goalkeeper Makenize Larson was strong in the net and made sure the close game went Marian’s way. Check out the for a full recap.
  3. Brother Rice lacrosse wins rivalry game:  The Warriors dominated Birmingham United 14-1 to improve to 4-1 on the season Wednesday. Sergio Perkovic was the star with three goals and an assist.
  4. Seaholm girls varsity tennis nets easy win:  started off play in the Oakland Athletics Association Red on the right foot. The Maples beat Rochester 6-2 and are still undefeated this season at 2-0-1. The highlight for Seaholm was a doubles win for Labina Petrovska and Elizabeth Gunckle over Julie Markiewicz and Kelli Wetherhole, (6-0, 6-2).
  5. Groves bounces back to end week:  The Falcons baseball team started out the week with a tough 6-1 loss to Andover on Wednesday, but quickly found their footing with a nice 15-9 win over Farmington. scored eight runs in the first two innings and ended the game with 14 hits. The win moves the Falcons back over .500 overall at 2-1 (1-1 OAA Central).
