Highlight Reel: Tennis Heavyweights Meet To Start Season

The Brother Rice varsity boys tennis team faces two of the top teams in Division 3 to kick off the year.

The fall sports season kicks into high gear after Labor Day weekend, but there was still some great action last week.

Highlights included the Groves football home opener, a perfect week for the Seaholm swim team, and some of the state’s tennis heavyweights battling it out for an early win.

The Brother Rice varsity tennis team had a solid first week of the season, picking up a win and a tie against two of the top teams in the state.

On Wednesday, the Warriors beat Detroit Country Day 6-2. They were a perfect 4-0 in doubles actions and combined wins by Gunnar Peery in No. 2 singles and Johnny Cameron in No. 4 singles were enough to pick up the win.

The Yellowjackets Sven Kranz beat Charlie Dillion in two sets (6-1, 6-1) in No. 1 singles and Rishi Patel beat Chase Peery in three sets in No. 3 singles (6-3, 4-6, 6-3).

Brother Rice came back on Friday to tie last year’s Division 3 champion Cranbrook Kingswood 4-4. Doubles were again the major strength for the Warriors. They won three of the four doubles matches to force the tie.

Johnny Cameron picked up Brother Rice’s lone singles win. He beat Will Dube in No. 4 singles in two sets (6-3, 6-1). Cranbrook Kingswood’s only doubles win was the No. 2 doubles team of Taylor Ghesquire and Stephanie Teste.

If Seaholm is going to keep playing like this, the Oakland Activities Association Blue division should be on notice.

“We put up 48 (last week) and 56 (this week). The kids are doing really well,” Head Coach Jim Pobursky said. “We are really pleased with the offensive line and their development. It’s been good, really good.”

Seaholm quarterback John Glazier was nearly perfect, going 11-for-12 for 270 yards and five touchdowns (three passing, two rushing). Chris Barr and J.D. Hess also had big nights. Hess finished the game with six catches for 126 yards. Barr had two catches for 64 yards and added another 64 yards on the ground.

On Friday, . Quarterback Joe Mayone threw two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to help his team even its record at 1-1.

The Falcons allowed Raiders running back Jacquis gain a lot of yards on the ground, but the home crowd helped them come back in the second half.

In other football action, weather delayed the game between Ann Arbor Pioneer and Brother Rice.

The teams were nine minutes into the first quarter at Berkley High School when lightening and rain delayed the game for over two hours. The teams decided to finish the game at 5 p.m. Sunday. Neither team put up any points on the board, so the game will resume 0-0.

Varsity Girls Swimming

Seaholm

That’s the way to start off a season.

The Maples beat West Bloomfield 137-49 on Tuesday and then came back on Thursday to beat Troy 133-53.

Out of the 12 races on Tuesday, the Maples swept seven of them. Seaholm's Chelsea Abbott won two individual races (200 individual medley and 500 freestyle) against the Lakers.

Against the Colts, they won all 12 events and had two swimmers win two individual events. This time it was Sydney McKay (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle) and Mykala Arnold (200 individual medley and 100 backstroke) that grabbed two wins each.
