Brother Rice Freshman Shon Powell Eliminated at State Wrestling Finals

After rebounding Friday morning for a win, the promising young wrestler fell in his afternoon match to John Julien of Hartland.

AUBURN HILLS - Brother Rice freshman Shon Powell was eliminated Friday afternoon at the state wrestling finals at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Here's the match-by-match overview of how he did Thursday and Friday.

After rebounding this morning with a win, the promising underclassman lost to John Julien of Hartland on a 10-4 decision in the 152-pound weight class. Powell had a successful freshman year, compiling a 49-5 record. Two of the five losses came in the state tournament and one came in the finals in regionals two weeks ago.

11:15 a.m. — Brother Rice's Shon Powell is back on track at the individual state finals. In the Division 1 152-pound consolation bracket, he picked up a win over Davon Jackson of Bay City Central in a 10-2 major decision. The freshman had a spectacular regular season, but was not himself Friday in his match against Mac Fisher from Adams. He was sick before the match and it seemed to slow him down. This morning he looked much better.

4:20 p.m. — Shon Powell (48-4) faced Mac Fisher (47-13) from Rochester Adams in an opening-round match in the 152-pound weight class, but Powell didn't look like he was 100 percent. The freshman ran to a garbage can and vomited profusely before the match. Asked after the match if it was nerves or the flu, his coach said he wasn’t sure, but “could be a little of both.”

When the match did get under way, the normally aggressive Powell wasn’t as sharp as he has been this season. Neither wrestler had a takedown in the opening round. Powell scored the first takedown in the second, but late in the round Fisher grabbed his leg and launched him into the scorer’s table as they were going out-of-bounds.

Powell wasn’t hurt, but it seemed to zap the rest of his energy. Fisher grabbed two takedowns and locked him up in a cradle hold in the final 20 seconds. Up 6-5, all Fisher needed to do was run out the clock. He did one better, he applied some more pressure and scored the pin with one second on the clock.

Final: Mac Fisher pins Shon Powell, winning in the second round of the opening match.
