Looking Ahead to Fall: Maples Volleyball Looks to Break 'District Curse'

The Maples volleyball team has fallen to Marian in district play three years in a row, but Seaholm is returning 11 starters this year and hopes to break the trend.

The Maples head volleyball coach Heather Lippert thinks this could be the year her team vanquishes its dreaded "district curse."

“This is a focused, veteran group, and they’re all pumped up for another shot at getting that district championship,” she said. “Winning — and winning big — is the only thing these girls are thinking about right now, in regards to this team. I think this could be our year.”

Lippert and her squad have good reason to be jacked for the pending campaign. Seaholm returns 11 starters off a team in 2010 that went 37-14 and .

Marian, winner of the past two Class A state titles, has ended the Maples’ season in the districts for the past three years. Boding well for Lippert’s team in 2011 is the fact that Marian lost several all-state players from its back-to-back state championship squads to graduation.

Look for Seaholm seniors Page Neuenfeldt, Shara Olivoa and Annie Sevec and junior Andrea Gochard to be the team's most productive players this season.
