Marian Scores 2-0 Win Over Bishop Foley

Goals from Alexa Finger and Elizabeth Tresnak gave the Mustangs a division win on Thursday.

BLOOMFIELD HILLS – The Marian girls varsity soccer team didn’t play its best on Thursday, but they still managed to pick up a shutout.

The Mustangs beat Bishop Foley 2-0 at home with goals from Alexa Finger and Elizabeth Tresnak.

“We’re still getting in the flow a little bit, it’s still relatively early in the season and we’re coming off break,” Marian coach Barry Brodsky said. “We just didn’t really execute offensively that well today.”

Bishop Foley tried to clog up the middle of the field and slow down Marian’s high-powered offense. Brodsky was constantly yelling for his girls to keep the ball towards the sidelines as they came up the field to try and create space in front of the net.

At times, the girls struggled with the game plan. “They were trying to pack it in and trying to play defense, which is a good strategy against us,” Brodsky said. “The best way to play that was to play it wide and play it from the flanks.”

The Mustangs were still able to generate enough offense to win. Finger scored in the first half and then Tresnak ended the game for the Ventures with her second goal.

Little more than halfway through the second half, Tresnak was shoved by a Bishop Foley player going for the ball deep into the Ventures zone. That set up a corner kick for the Mustangs.

Erin Ring lofted it front of the goal and both Tresnak and Catherine Anger were perfectly positioned to knock it in with a header.

“Tresnak ended up getting her head on it and knocked it in,” Brodsky said. “She’s having a very good season. She’s a strong, tall girl.”

Just a minute later, the Mustangs nearly added a third goal on another corner kick.

Ring’s kick sailed past the goal this time, but a defender kicked the ball right to Michelle Mirasol with Bishop Foley’s goalkeeper out of position. A defender was able to get a leg on Mirasol’s shot and Danielle Mazur had a good look on the rebound. Her shot sailed just to the right of the goal.

Marian’s defense made sure the 2-0 lead was good enough. Goalkeeper Makenize Larson looked good for the Mustangs.

“Makenzie definitely came up with some big saves. If Mackenize wasn’t on her game it might have been a different story,” Brodsky said.
