Seaholm Falls to North Farmington in Boys, Girls Track Meet

The Seaholm track and field squads fell at home despite several exceptional performances by Maple runners.

The Maples hosted North Farmington and Oxford on Tuesday evening, but could not pull out a team victory.

North Farmington boys beat Seaholm 72-56, while the Maples girls squad fell to North Farmington 76-52 during the two-school meet.

Despite the loss, members of the Maples boys’ team had exceptional days. Jack Howard of Seaholm won three of his events: the 1,600-meter run, 800-meter run and the 3,200-meter run.

Fellow Maples Max Gomez and Mark Bennett rounded out the 1,600-meter, placing second and third respectively. The trio also swept the 3,200-meter run, with Bennett coming in second and Gomez following closely behind in third. Gomez placed second in the 800-meter run, as well.

“We saw some awesome times,” said Seaholm boys coach David Hamway.  “All in all, we ran really competitive against North Farmington.”

North Farmington coach Jeff Simpson said he knew the day was going to be tough because of injuries, but his team pulled through.

“For being short-handed, we knew we needed to run well against Seaholm,” Simpson said. “We were scrambling a little bit and just told the rest of our kids to step up.”

Even though the weather was cold, Hamway was happy with how the meet turned out. “We try not to worry about the weather,” Hamway said. “We scored better in this meet than any other meet this season.”

Senior Seaholm girls captain Maryann Laboe agreed, noting being a distance runner makes the cold easier to handle. “I feel like when you run that long the weather doesn’t really affect it,” Laboe said.“I pretty much warmed up when I did my two-mile."

In fact, North Farmington girls coach Bill Pinnell said the cold weather was probably worse for the spectators than his runners, who saw many of their personal bests broken at the meet. "We knew the meet would be very competitive today and the girls came through for us."

The lady Maples won the high jump, 3,200-meter run and four by 800-meter relay.

Both the boys and girls Seaholm squads will compete at the Oakland Athletics Association Championships May 13 at North Farmington.
