Robert deMaine was the popular principal cellist of the DSO for 10 years, from 2002 to 2012, playing under bothMusic Directors Jarvi and Slatkin. He put down roots in Detroit – he was married here, his children were born here, he watched the Tigers play the World Series (he’s a big baseball fan) and he had many friends inside and outside the orchestra. As his career grew, he made the difficult decision to leave Detroit. In several interviews, he expressed regret, saying “I cannot stress enough how much I love my colleagues in the DSO, the dear friends I have made, and the city of Detroit;” he later told the Los Angeles Times "we weren't eager to leave."

In 2012, he won the job as principal cellist with one of the world’s great orchestras, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, with its star music director, Gustavo Dudamel. He remains in LA today but also enjoys a solo career that takes him around the world to major festivals and solo engagements. He’s been hailed by The New York Times as "an artist who makes one hang on every note” and by the Salt Lake Tribune as “magnificent...his technical brilliance is surpassed only by the beauty of tones he produces."
