Coronavirus Update: More Than 400 Deaths Reported In Michigan

The death toll for coronavirus cases in Michigan has reached 400.

MICHIGAN — The latest numbers for coronavirus cases in Michigan were released Thursday, bringing the number of confirmed cases to more than 10,700 and the death toll has now crossed 400.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services confirmed an additional 1,457 cases as of 10 a.m. Thursday, with 80 new deaths.

The southeast Michigan region now continues to have the three hardest hit counties in the state. Detroit is nearing 3,000 cases, with 2,858 reported as of Thursday. Of those, 101 have died. Wayne County (2,211) and Oakland County (2,183) have the highest totals among counties. They each reported 93 and 119 deaths, respectively.

The state continued its fight against the spread of coronavirus Thursday, with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signing an executive order closing K-12 schools to face-to-face classes. The move is just another in a list of attempts to slow down the virus as it spreads.

Detroit specifically was dealt a pair of blows Thursday, with the news of a Michigan Department of Corrections officer from Detroit dying from the coronavirus. The city's council president, Brenda Jones, released a statement Thursday indicating that she had tested positive for the virus.

Below is a breakdown of various data provided by the MDHHS:

Sex:

  • Of the confirmed cases, 51 percent are female; 49 percent are male. However, 62 percent of coronavirus deaths in Michigan are men.

Age:

  • The majority of confirmed cases (20 percent) are individuals between the ages of 50-59. 18 percent range 60-69, while 17 percent are between 40 and 49 years old. The median age among those who have died from coronavirus is 73. The age range is 20 years old to 107 years old.
