Detroit Native Ali Jackson Returns Home for World Premiere Performance at Spread Art

Detroit native and internationally acclaimed drummer, composer and bandleader Ali Jackson will return home for a one-night-only world premiere performance in Detroit, presented in collaboration with the Detroit Jazz Orchestra, on Thursday, May 14, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Spread Art Detroit, 5141 Rosa Parks Blvd.

At the center of the evening is a newly composed work by Jackson, offering audiences a rare opportunity to experience a world premiere from one of contemporary jazz’s most compelling voices in an intimate hometown setting. Known for his dynamic, lyrical drumming and masterful sense of time, Jackson has built a global reputation through his work with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, his longtime collaboration with Wynton Marsalis and performances at leading international festivals.

Blending deep jazz tradition with global influences, modern harmonic language and a strong narrative approach, Jackson’s compositions create immersive musical experiences that resonate with both seasoned listeners and new audiences. This special Detroit performance reflects both his artistic evolution and his continued connection to the city that shaped his sound.

Jackson will be joined by the Detroit Jazz Orchestra and an ensemble of standout musicians, including Vincent Chandler, Russ Macklem, Dwight Adams, Aidan Clark and Sasha Kashsperko, highlighting the depth of Detroit’s jazz talent while supporting his latest work.
