Botsford nurse takes first place in master's level research competition

Jan Cecil, RN, MSN, a 34-year veteran member of the staff in Botsford Hospital's New Beginnings Maternity Center, has received first place in Midwest Nursing Research Society's (MNRS) 2014 Student Poster Competition at the master's level. She received this honor at the MNRS annual conference in March. 
 
Her submission entitled "Does Nurse Handoff at the Bedside Promote Accountability and Increase Nurse Satisfaction?" was abstracted from Cecil's quality improvement project she did while a graduate student in the Master of Science in Nursing Program at Eastern Michigan University (she received her MSN in December). Her academic research is relevant to Botsford Hospital; Cecil's quality improvement project research was completed on Botsford's 5 North Medical-Surgical Nursing Unit with the approval of hospital leadership. The assignment, "Implementing Bedside Shift Report on 5 North," is in full implementation on that nursing unit and is rolling out to other nursing units at the hospital. 
 
"Jan worked tirelessly on her master’s assignment," says Marge Hasler, RN, MSN, Botsford's vice president of Patient Care Services and chief nursing officer. "The outcomes are very real here at Botsford. Using Jan's findings, we have improved our bedside change-of-shift reporting practice, which positively impacts patient safety and quality care. Moreover, Jan's work has helped to integrate the patient into the care team, promotes a safer patient handoff, fosters patient and caregiver trust, and increases care team accountability."
