Diffusing Dangerous Situations All in A Day's Work

The Farmington Hills 2015 Police Officer of the Year, Sgt. Richard Wehby, has been with the department for 20 years.

FARMINGTON HILLS, MI – The Farmington Hills Police Department’s 2015 Police Officer of the Year prevented a suicide, showed leadership at the scene of a deadly shooting and diffused a suspect barricaded in an apartment and armed with a knife.

Oh, and Sgt. Richard Wehby, a 20-year veteran of the police department, also helped the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office get a conviction in a 19-year-old cold case.

Wehby was honored at the city’s 40th Annual Outstanding Employee Awards Ceremony held last month at the Costick Center.

His 2015 citations and awards included:

  • A Life Saving Award for his response to the suicidal person, where he was able to stop the person from further harming himself and rendered first aid;
  • A Unit Citation for his actions and leadership at the scene of a deadly shooting;
  • A Unit Citation for his coordination and response in diffusing a distraught person barricaded in an apartment and armed with a knife; and
  • For recognition in coordinating information at the scene of a home invasion in progress that led to the arrest of the suspects responsible.

Before joining the Farmington Hills Police Department, he worked as a police officer in Memphis, TN, from 1990-1995. He has an associate’s degree in criminal justice from St. Thomas Aquinas Junior College and attended Memphis State University for three years.

At Farmington Hills, he as also served as a patrol officer, a narcotics detective as a member of the South Oakland Narcotics Intelligence Consortium, and a etective in the Investigative Division. He currently as a patrol supervisor. He has received the following:

  • Five Letters of Appreciation
  • One Merit Award
  • One Life Saving Award
  • One Commendation
  • A Valorous Conduct Award for his response to a confrontation with an armed suspect during a drug raid that resulted in the disarming of the subject and diffusing a potentially life threatening situation.
  • One Chief’s Citation
  • A Domestic Violence Prevention Hero Award by the Oakland County Coordinating Council Against Domestic Violence
  • Three City of Farmington Public Safety Unit Citations
  • A Farmington Hills Fire Department Unit Citation
  • The Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office Distinguished Service Award for his investigative work on several high profile cases, including the successful prosecution of a 19-year-old cold case murder investigation.
