Farmington Hills-Based Chamber Music Society Presents Artists in 'Die Winterreise'

Christoph Prégardien will perform Franz Schubert's song cycle in its entirety with pianist Menahem Pressler.

The Chamber Music Society of Detroit, based in Farmington Hills, presents acclaimed tenor Christoph Prégardien in a Dec. 15 performance of Franz Schubert’s song cycle Die Winterreise, in its entirety, with pianist Menahem Pressler.

The Signature Series concert begins at 8 p.m. in the Seligman Performing Arts Center, 22305 W. 13 Mile Rd. (Lahser and 13 Mile Roads), Beverly Hills, on the campus of Detroit Country Day School.

Schubert composed his song cycle, Die Winterreise, shortly before his death. Because of its size, scope and emotional depth, it is widely regarded as one of the greatest works in the history of art song. This concert will mark the first performance of the complete work in the Chamber Music Society of Detroit series.

At 6:45 p.m., Dr. Steven Rings, Associate Professor of Music at the University of Chicago and popular CMSD lecturer, will give his only pre-concert talk of the 2012-13 season, discussing Schubert’s Die Winterreise.

Chamber Music Society single ticket prices have been reduced for the 2012-2013 season. Tickets range from $30 to $60; student tickets are available at half price in selected sections of the hall, and $10 student rush tickets are available at the box office one hour prior to performance. On Friday, Dec. 14, 3:30 p.m., Pressler will conduct a master class with four of the finest student pianists from Michigan’s university music departments. The event, part of the Chamber Music Society’s inDepth series, is open to the public free of charge at Schaver Music Recital Hall at Wayne State University, Old Main, 480 W.
