Grant Will Help Farmington School's Homeless Kids

The grant will help the Farmington Public School system feed and shelter 138 students classified as homeless.

The Farmington/Farmington Hills Foundation for Youth and Families awarded a grant in the amount of $3,500 to the Farmington Public Schools’ Homeless Education Program. The grant will provide monetary assistance for emergency shelter and food.

Currently, there are 138 students classified as homeless in the district. This year, families have needed more help with emergency shelter and food than in any previous year, according to a news release from the district

At this time, there are 13 students from seven families staying in motels funded by charitable organizations and churches in Farmington and Farmington Hills.

When students don’t have what most would consider basic necessities, like shelter and food, they become preoccupied with shame and guilt. This grant helps make it possible for them to reach their educational potential. Farmington Public Schools wants every student to feel safe and warm regardless of their families’ economic status.
