Medical Examiner Explains Real-Life 'CSI' Forensic Work

Dr. Ljubisa J. Dragovic returns to the Farmington Public Library to offer insights about being the Oakland County medical examiner.

Last year, Dr. Ljubisa J. Dragovic spoke to a crowd at the about his adventures as a medical examiner. The event was so well-received that Dragovic was invited to return, and he will detail more about his work in the program “What the Heck Does a Medical Examiner Do?”

“This is a continuation of the prior (talk) last year," Dragovic said. “As far as the case I’m going to talk about, it’s certainly interesting. It created a lot of media coverage at the time. I’m going to talk a little bit more about the inside facts that have never been revealed through the press. There’s always the thing in the news — and the thing behind the news.”

Dragovic will not only discuss the forensics of the case, along with showing slides, he will take questions from the audience. According to the doctor, people really got a lot out of that part of the evening the last time around.

“They were really interested in general about the scope of activities and how one goes into the depth of investigation,” Dragovic said. “I think I can give people some more direct insight into how the system works and where, from time to time, it gets broken down. It’s just one of those examples where the complexities of the case reflect the limitations and the vitality of the system.”

Mary Carleton, a technologist at the library, saw him last year and is very excited about his return.

“I actually changed my schedule so I could see him again,” Carleton said. “He gives you a really good look into the inside of forensics and its part of the judicial process. I read a lot of mysteries, and I like to see how those things come together. He has some interesting stories, but he’s still compassionate. He does a really good show. People love him.”

Sharon Vincent, Farmington Community Library branch manager, also shared interest about the event.

“We had rave reviews from the patrons that came (last year). It was very well-received. The people were fascinated. It plays right into the popularity of CSI and those kinds of programs as the science of medical examiner," she said.

Dr. Ljubisa J. Dragovic will discuss “What the Heck Does a Medical Examiner Do?”  at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Farmington Hills Main Library auditorium. The event is free, but you must make a reservation. Call 248-553-6880 or visit farmlib.org to register.
