Negoshian to Negoshian: North Farmington Hires New Basketball Coach

Todd Negoshian is taking over his father Tom's position as the boys varsity basketball coach at North Farmington.

Being named the new boys basketball coach at does not mean that Todd Negoshian is brand new.

Negoshian has been involved with the North Farmington program, either directly or indirectly, for many years. The Walled Lake native has been a varsity assistant and junior varsity coach for the past four years. His dad, Tom Negoshian, has been the head coach of the Raiders for 25 seasons.

“There are some things that will change,” Todd Negoshian said. “For the most part we’ve got things established with our kids knowing how to play hard and play smart so we will just keep rolling with that.”

North Farmington Athletic Director Tim Carruthers said that Tom Negoshian’s history with the program has helped his son gain unique training experience.

“It’s hard to even articulate the amount of time and energy and how many kids they have … had an effect on through the years,” Carruthers said.

Not only has Todd Negoshian gotten to share in the coaching experience with his father, he has been involved in basketball himself his whole life. He played four years in high school and one and a half seasons in college as a point guard, forWalled Lake Central.

His full season of collegiate basketball was played at Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids, where he won a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics championship. He played part of a season at Wayne State before injuries cut his career short. He was also a graduate assistant at Oakland University.

“I think he’s been well tutored, certainly,” Carruthers said. “The fact that he played college basketball gives him a really neat perspective.”

The Negoshian family hasn’t just been involved in North Farmington’s program, Todd’s brother Ryan is the junior varsity coach at Waterford Kettering.

“The biggest thing I’d like to do is just carry on some of the traditions they have, not only with the basketball program that my father started but also with the school and Rick Jones and the legacy he’s leaving behind when he retires this year,” Todd Negoshian said.

Jones, the North Farmington principal, will be leaving the school at the end of this year.

Todd Negoshian is hopeful about the future of the program. He is hoping to keep the tradition of on- and off-the-court player excellence that his father has cultivated. The players can be both great players and great role models, he said.

“Hopefully the wins and losses will fall where they need to,” Negoshian added.
