Overnight I-696 Lane Closures: 5 Things to Know
Overnight I-696 traffic will be reduced to one lane for two weeks in construction area. Two weekend shut-downs planned.

METRO DETROIT, MI – Overnight lane closures expand to Interstate 696 Monday and will continue for two weeks as part of the Interstate 275 reconstruction project, the Michigan Department of Transportation said.
MDOT said in a news release that road patching occurring on I-696 between Lahser Road and the I-275/I-9/M-5 interchange will require the overnight lane closures, and two complete shutdowns of I-696 on upcoming weekends.
Here’s what you need to know about the work, occurring on sections of I-696 in Farmington Hills and Southfield:

- Beginning at 9 p.m. Monday, two westbound lanes of I-696 will close between Middle Belt Road and I-275.
- At 11 p.m. Monday, a third lane will close, leaving only one lane open until 5 a.m. when all laines are to reopen.
- When patching there is complete, work will shift to westbound I-696 between Lahser and Middle Belt.
- Westbound I-696 will be completely shut down from 9 p.m. on Friday, May 20, to 5 a.m. on Monday, May 23. Dates of a second full closure will be annonced when it is scheduled.
A stretch of southbound I-275 is also closed as part of the overall $75 million reconstruction project that improves the road from north of Five Mile Road to the I-96/I-696/M-5 interchange.
