1. Lansing Promise adds Central Michigan as partner university (lansingstatejournal.com) — Lansing students now have another major college option, as the Lansing Promise scholarship can be used for up to $20,000 toward tuition at Central Michigan University, plus an extra $1,000 from CMU itself. The place-based program already supports Lansing School District graduates at Lansing Community College and several other institutions, and recently awarded $1.2 million in aid for the 2024-25 school year.

2. Lansing Police had extra patrols of River Trail amid homeless deaths (wkar.org) — Lansing residents who use the River Trail should know police have been running extra patrols there since mid-June, after a series of deaths involving homeless men found beaten or stabbed along the path. Five people have died over the past 11 months, four in July and August, and while one suspect is in custody in a single case, investigators are still probing possible connections.

3. 'Carrying on a legacy.' Old bars in Lansing area offer nostalgia, history (bnd.com) — Several long-running bars in the Lansing area, including Corey's Lounge and Stober's Bar in Lansing, are spotlighted for preserving decades of neighborhood history and camaraderie. Owners in Holt, Eaton Rapids, Grand Ledge, and Lansing describe the responsibility of maintaining old buildings, honoring regulars' memories, and making careful updates so these beloved gathering spots remain familiar to local patrons.

4. EXCLUSIVE: 6 minutes with New York Times Publisher A.G. Sulzberger on free press (statenews.com) — At Michigan State University in East Lansing, New York Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger urged students and residents to actively support local journalism, including by subscribing to local papers. He warned that U.S. press freedoms face their most serious challenges in decades and highlighted how student newsrooms, including MSU's, increasingly fill critical gaps in community reporting.

5. Current phase of US-127 project expected done by end of November, more work coming next spring (wilx.com) — Drivers in Lansing should expect US-127 construction between I-69 and Lake Lansing Road to continue through November, with another major phase from I-496 to Lake Lansing Road starting next spring and lasting until 2029. MDOT says the long project will eliminate potholes and replace several bridges on this heavily traveled Mid-Michigan corridor, which many commuters use daily between Lansing and other cities.
