New Cupcake Shop Sets Out to Soothe Macomb Sweet Tooth

Babycakes Cafe Cupcakes and More is set to open Dec. 20 at Romeo Plank and 23 Mile Road across from St. Isidore Catholic Church.

Have you noticed Macomb Township’s serious lack of cupcakes?

Pamela Ferguson certainly did, so one year ago the Bruce Township businesswoman set out to soothe the sweet tooth of an area in desperate need of a little frosted TLC.

“I knew there was nothing like this around and people are begging for a coffee shop in this area,” Ferguson said. “One day I was in a cupcake shop, buying cupcakes, and a light bulb went off.”

Babycakes Café Cupcakes and More is set to open Dec. 20.

“I’m really excited to bring these products, Michigan-made products, to Macomb Township, an area that doesn’t have a business such as this,” Ferguson said. “Whether its parents buying a cupcake for their child to reward them on a good day, or special ordering cupcakes for your wedding, we want to fill the need.”

Located at 51090 Romeo Plank Road, in the plaza just north of 23 Mile Road, Babycakes isn’t your traditional cupcake shop.

“My business will be unique in the fact that I am not baking on site, but have partnered with Rockin’ Cupcakes Rochester for their gourmet cupcakes, Peteet’s Famous Cheesecakes for their cheesecake cupcakes (and) Buccilli’s Cake Shop in Almont for their cookies, cinnamon rolls, brownies, etc.”

Although Ferguson plans to put her own spin on the names of the products she sells, she assures future customers that the taste will be that of the Rockin’, Peteet’s and Buccilli products people know and love.

In terms of pricing, Ferguson wants to keep costs low as she expects families with only a few dollars to spare to be her primary customers.

The cupcakes, which are Babycakes’ feature item, will run about $2.95 each, with discounts on purchases by the dozen. For a few extra dollars, customers can also enjoy a Caribou coffee, cappuccino, hot chocolate or selection of Pepsi products.

While Ferguson expects most of her business to be take-out, she said customers are more than welcome to enjoy the store’s 32-inch TV, free Wi-Fi and “sweet” atmosphere, too.

“We’ll have about five tables or so and they can certainly come in and hang out with us,” Ferguson said. “I want it to be a fun, happy place.”

And seeing that Babycakes is located across the street from , around the corner from and in the same plaza as , which just so happens to be owned by her daughter, Ferguson has good reason to believe her venture “is going to do well.”

Unlike other cupcake shops, which tend to open later because of on-site baking, Ferguson plans to open her doors at 8 a.m. seven days a week.

“I decided it would be a shame to lose three hours worth of business when I’m also selling other baked goods,” she said. “With the church across the street and their front door facing mine, I mean as a business-minded person, it’s at least worth a shot to see how we do.”

Each morning, Ferguson will drive to Rochester Hills to pick up a fresh batch of Rockin’ cupcakes and until she sells out, customers will have a selection of 12-13 cupcakes, with even more varieties of cheesecake cupcakes, drinks and other baked goods available.

Babycakes will close up shop Monday-Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m.
