I wasn't going to post until around the weekend of June 1st, to discuss issues with the VA, but then something was brought up tonight, and it was too good of an opportunity to pass up.
Tonight, I went with my dad to the Spring Gala. The US senator was there, the person running for governor, and many others. They were speaking about what they wanted to do if they were in office, and the budget for education was brought up. However, I am not hear to talk about the budget, I am here to talk about our public education system.
I go to Salem High School. I am 17 years old. I am a senior, and I am going off to college.
I want you to ask me the following things:
1. Do I know how to fill out a resume?
2. Do I know how to change a tire?
3. Do I know how to fixed ripped jeans?
4. Do I know how to file my taxes?
I guarantee the answer will be no. Not just from me, but from many students my age. Now I get that there are selective classes for those kinds of things, at least at my school there is, and I know that parents could teach us this and drivers ed as well, but my drivers ed class didn't teach that. We didn't go through it thoroughly. Our parents can help us learn how to fill a resume and file taxes, but in reality? By the time they come home from work, chances are they are probably just too tired, which is understandable. Us students may not even have the time. Me, for instance. Typical High School-er, working not one, but two jobs on top of homework that is almost daily. I don't even have the time. As far as fixing ripped jeans go, not everyone knows how to sew.
I mean yeah, sure school is teaching us things we need to know for future college courses and such, but they're teaching us specific things. They aren't teaching us things that we absolutely NEED to know.
I mentioned earlier that they do have classes for this, but the keyword is selective. SELECTIVE classes. You CHOOSE to take it. Now yes, knowing my constitutional rights and history is important, but in reality, is it preparing us for the real world? I don't think so.
