The ceremony, hosted by the Rochester Hills Fire Department, will be held at its Station No. 1 headquarters from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11.

On Sept. 11, 2001, al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four airliners and carried out suicide attacks that killed 2,996 people and injured more than 6,000 others. Two of the planes hit the World Trade Center towers, another hit the Pentagon and a third crashed in a field in Pennsylvania.

“As we pause to reflect on that horrific Tuesday morning 15 years ago, we must never forget the way that day changed us as a nation," Mayor Bryan K. Barnett said in a statement. “We also honor the men and women who serve as our emergency responders and those who protect our country to give us the freedoms we have and enjoy today.”

The ceremony will remember the civilians who lost their lives, but also commemorate firefighters, police officers, EMS professionals and military personnel who continue to serve their country. They are asked to wear their Class A dress uniforms,or the highest level of uniform available, Barnett said.
