Logo Selected for the Harper Charity Cruise 2013

Macomb Community College students once again competed to create the logo which will appear on letterhead, posters and t-shirts for the 2013 Harper Charity Cruise.

When the 2013 Harper Charity Cruise revs up next August, the work of one Macomb Community College will adorn t-shirts, posters and other items.

The logo created by Linda Hopkins, a digital design and layout student from Royal Oak, was selected by a panel of judges from the 16 submitted students.

Hopkins, a St. Clair Shores native, integrated a marquee and a cartoon-image of a classic car.

"I pictured a car being the star of the show," said Hopkins, who created a car with a big smile on the grill and a top hat.

This is the second year the Shorewood Kiwanis partnered with Macomb Community College to have students design the cruise logo by using the latest software and hardware available at the school. This year there was twice as many entries as last year.

"It was tough narrowing it down," said Tom Ulrich, Shorewood Kiwanis secretary. "(The competition) solved a problem for us getting a good design."

Hopkins, a former automotive designer who placed second in last year’s competition, received a $1,000 cash prize from the Shorewood Kiwanis a $1,000 Macomb scholarship. Amanda Yokley, of Roseville, created the second place logo and received a $600 cash prize and $600 scholarship. Ryan Conant, of Warren, came in third place and received a $400 cash and a $400 scholarship.

The Macomb scholarships are funded by the Donald Foren Fund, which supports the college’s advanced technology and engineering programs, through the Macomb Community College Foundation. Roy O'Brien Ford and the Shorewood Kiwanis donated the money for the scholarships.

"Thank you St. Clair Shores, Kiwanis and Roy O'Brien Ford for supporting these students and for supporting our media and communications arts program," said Dean Joe Petrosky.

And if you were wondering, the cruise will be Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013.
