Ron Cameron Opens Home Run Eatery on Orchard Lake Road
The "sports restaurant" serves certified Angus beef burgers, sandwiches, pizza and other Italian and American fare.
Ron Cameron is pretty easy to figure out. The sports talk radio host since what seems like time immemorial (nearly 41 years) said he has about two interests: sports and food. The 66-year-old Southfield resident hosts "Sports Talk" on WDFN-AM (1130) Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and again on Friday mornings from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. on WPON-AM (1460). On Monday, Cameron opened what he describes as a "sports restaurant" called Ron Cameron's Home Run Eatery at 7325 Orchard Lake Rd. at Northwestern Hwy. Patch caught up with Cameron just as the Detroit sports scene heats up.
Patch: What do you hope to offer in atmosphere?
Ron Cameron: It's a sports restaurant—different from a sports bar or a family restaurant, we're trying to combine the two. We want you to come for the food, which is great, and stay for some fun and the chance to talk some sports. We're hoping to be able to broadcast the show here a few times and we'll bring in guests—radio show hosts and Detroit sports celebrities—to chat along with us. We've got the two flat-screen TVs on the wall and another 40-incher set to come this week. You can see we've got posters on the wall of all of the great teams in Detroit. It's a fun, relaxing place.

Patch: What do you recommend from the menu?
Cameron: is working with us to provide five of their entrees—eggplant rollatini, penne marinara, chicken Parmesan, chicken Alfredo and spaghetti—which are all delicious. We've got a pizza oven and certified Angus beef burgers, which are the best you can have. We've got a Dearborn-brand stacked ham sandwich, which should be very popular, and a barbecue pulled-pork sandwich, which should be popular as well.

Patch: What topics in the world of sports are you burning on?
Cameron: We're hoping to be able to incorporate the local sports in with this—I had the Farmington Hills Harrison football coach John Herrington on the show a few weeks ago, and I'm hoping to speak with the folks at West Bloomfield (High School) about that, too. Mostly it's football and baseball—the Lions should go 8-8 and I think they might take third place in the (NFC North) division. It depends on how much (Minnesota Vikings quarterback Donovan) McNabb has left in the gas tank. I like the Tigers to make the playoffs but lose in the first round. Great pitchers—I love Verlander, Porcello, and Scherzer, but you need to be able to manufacture runs in the playoffs and the offense is too slow.
The Home Run Eatery is open weekdays 11 a.m.-10 p.m. and weekends 7 a.m.-10 p.m. It offers catering and delivery services. Entrees run from $7-$12. For more information, visit its page on Facebook.
