Elementary Students Walk Around the World...Twice!

Board of Education Meeting: Pep Grant update, new Lakeland Assistant Principle approved, goals pass.

Thursday night’s Board of Education meeting opened with the acknowledgement of the district’s top 27 Mileage Club members. The room was packed with proud parents and children as the top three students from each of the nine elementary schools were called up to receive their awards.

Last year, Huron Valley’s elementary students walked a total of 48,130 miles.

“Just as a reference point I did a quick Google search,” commented trustee, Charles Dittmar, “And that’s two times around the earth. That’s what our students ran last year.”

The Mileage Club is a product of the PEP (Physical Education Program) Grant which provides $554,619 over the course of three years to promote various aspects of health and well-being into the elementary curriculum.

Now in the third and final year of the grant, Huron Valley students and staff have met and exceeded the numerous assessments required in order to retain grant funds.

One of the program’s main goals is to engage students in at least 150 minutes of physical activity per week. From September 2010 to April 2011, an average of 91.5 percent of Huron Valley elementary students were achieving at least 150 minutes of physical activity per week. This information is obtained through individual student activity logs.

Students also scored above average in measurements of motor skills, knowledge of nutrition and knowledge of responsible personal and social behaviors related to healthy habits.

In other news, the board unanimously voted to approve Elizabeth Mosher as the new assistant principle at Lakeland High School. Mosher was picked from an initial pool of over 200 applicants. The position became available when former assistant, Kristin McMurren, .

“I’ve been excited through the whole process,” said Mosher on her appointment. “I can’t wait to get started. I am really appreciative for you giving me the opportunity.”

Other agenda items included:

  • Unanimous passing of items on the Consent Agenda, including the district's bills.
  • Unanimous approval of the district’s 2011-2012 goals.

The next Board of Education meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m., Oct. 6 at Milford High School.

All board members were present for the night's meeting and votes.
