Should either finish among the top three vote-getters, they could technically still accept a school board position. If Berger or Rider are elected and decline the positions, the school board will appoints someone to fill the vacant seat until the 2013 election.

Edina School District residents will also be voting on two separate referendums this year:

A renewal of the district's existing property tax levy. It would collect $3 million per year for general funding and be used to keep class sizes stable and allow the district to offer varied academic programs. The current levy expires in 2012.

  • What's at stake: If voters approve the renewal levy, it will remain in place for 10 years. Should voters reject the referendum, the district has said it would be forced to undergo another BRRRG (Budget Reduction Reallocation and Revenue Generation) process to adjust the budget by $3 million.

A renewal and increase of the district's existing property tax levy to be used soley for technology. It would collect $4.5 million per year and be in place for the next 10 years. Edina currently collects approximately $122 per student, for a total of $1 million annually. The new levy would put that amount closer to $549 per pupil.

  • What's at stake: The district has used general fund dollars for technology needs in the past, with officials saying the expanded tech funding would free up that general fund money for other uses. If voters reject the levy, the district would lose the existing $1 million and be forced to reallocate $1.2 million from the general fund to support other classroom needs.
