(PHOTOS) Boys Lacrosse Upsets Defending State Champs
The Hornets took down Benilde-St. Margaret's in the section semifinals.
Last night, the Red Knights’ dream of a third straight state championship was shattered by a blazing Hornets attack in a 9-5 win for . The win over the 12-2 Red Knights was a surprise for the 5-9-1 Hornets, who were celebrating on the sidelines as the clock ran down in the fourth quarter.
Both defenses blocked several attacks early in the first quarter before Benilde-St. Margaret's scored about four minutes in. Edina quickly came back with senior attacker Danny Regan scoring his first of three goals in the game. Midfielder Ted Goltzman soon followed with another goal for the Hornets. Attacker Danny Burke scored the Hornets’ third goal of the quarter, putting the Hornets up 3-2.
Both teams scored once in the second quarter, leaving Edina in the lead 4-3 at the half.

The Hornets came on strong in the third quarter with three goals, while Edina’s defense kept the Red Knights from scoring.

In addition to Regan’s hat trick, senior attacker Derek Todd scored twice, bringing his total for the season to 45, tied for third in the state in goals scored this season. Midfielder Willie Duggan won half of the face offs and was given possession off of penalties in several others, which helped Edina control the ball and move it into Benilde territory.
The star of the game was, by all measures, Edina goalie Austin Dover, who blocked 17 of 22 shots on goal for a season best save percentage of 0.773.

Edina now prepares to face sixth-ranked Blake in the section finals after Blake defeated second-ranked St. Thomas Tuesday night. The Hornets will play at 8 p.m. Thursday at Edina’s .
