Minneapolis Area Farmers Market Gems

The farmers market is the perfect place to walk along at a luxuriously slow pace in the early morning sunshine. Wander through piles of fresh vegetables, aromatic herbs and brightly colored cut flowers and let your senses be your guide.

If you find yourself in Minneapolis; here are my picks for the loveliest Farmers Markets in the city, as well as purveyors, farmers and artisans that provide the best in local & sustainable produce and more.

1. Mill City Farmers Market

This market is nestled into the Mill District of Minneapolis where the Mill City Museum is now the site of what was, at one time, the world's largest flour mill. You can catch sights of the gorgeous Mississippi river all while shopping at a market with a focus on local, sustainable and organic agriculture. The heirloom varieties of tomatoes, watermelon, and even garlic will make you wonder what you've been missing out on.  The reason heirloom varieties of fruits and vegetables have such exquisite flavor is due to the fact that these plants have adapted in their native terroir and retain intense natural flavor and texture. Most of the produce you find in your grocery store is engineered with a focus on breeding plants for it's ability to travel long distances, disease resistance and appearance, not taste.

At the market, make sure to stop by Loon Organics for beautiful, delicious produce that is all grown by an adorable couple who made their own way as farmers. For award winning cheese, Sheperds Way Farm is *it*. Also, stop by Schultz Farm for organic fruit and jams. I can taste this jam tart already...

2. Minneapolis Farmers Market

Minneapolis' oldest open air market, dates back to 1876. Here you will find the widest variety of produce, flowers and artisan items. The just-picked produce, local meat & dairy, beds of flowers waiting to be planted, the smells of fresh brats, grilled sweet corn and candied almonds wafting through the air. A must stop stall here is Dehn's Gardens . Dehn's Gardens packages their spring greens in a lovely package adorned with edible flowers. What a perfect hostess gift for a dinner with friends. Dehn's also has bunches of almost every fresh herb you might be craving. I also found a rare fruit that is only available for a few weeks in Minnesota at this market, wild plums from Appleberry Farm.

This is also the only site in Minneapolis that I've seen where you can pick bouquet stems of fresh flowers from the cooler @ a reasonable price. It's called Market Flowers at the Farmers Market Annex. Flower love.

The large scale and central location of the market in Minneapolis is what makes this market truly special.  Featuring over 200 local growers and a handful of re-seller's who provide a selection of global produce to our diverse community.

3. The City of Minneapolis markets.

The City of Minneapolis is unique in that many of it's neighborhoods have banded together to create community farmers markets. Check out this listing and find one close by you so that you too can stroll to the market via bike or foot. I just adore the Fulton Farmers MarketSweetland Orchard will be there this fall. Their apples range from favorites like honeycrisp and braeburn to many unique varieties that are not easily found. Last fall I tried a pink fleshed apple called a Scarlet Surprise

Minnesota's boundless season of fresh, seasonal provisions is nearing a close, so be sure to enjoy every moment of it. Go ahead, indulge.
