But things got tricky in doubles, thanks to Wayzata’s team depth.
The Trojans picked up a win at No. 3 doubles, and coupled with Trojans’ senior Lucia Solis winning at No. 2 doubles, the match was 3-2 in Edina’s favor with No. 1 and 2 doubles still in play.
Hannah Hankinson and Mackenzie Marinovich pulled out a 2-6, 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles, coming from behind and picking up the three-set win to give the Hornets the team victory.
“They learned a lot, and I think they grew up a little bit today,” Paulsen said of Hankinson and Marinovich. “They’ve had some ups and downs, and to come back after losing the first set and winning the next two, that was a good thing.”
Moments later, Morgan Marinovich and Meghan Herring pulled off another comeback, turning a 5-1, third-set deficit into a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 win.
Paulsen said the adversity of facing a talented Trojans team taught the Hornets a lesson heading into the section playoffs.
“Certainly not to take anything for granted,” he said. “Having a good quality match like this and being pushed, that will help us.”
