Sports Update: Edina Soccer Advances In Playoffs, Boys CC Wins Lake Title

It was a good Thursday for several Hornets squads.

It was a triumphant Thursday for a trio of Edina athletic squads as the Hornets boys cross-country team won a conference title while the boys and girls soccer teams were both triumphant in their playoff openers.

Boys Cross-Country

The Edina boys cross-country team ran its way to a hard-earned Lake Conference championship on Thursday at Gale Woods Farm, winning a meet that saw the top four squads separated by just 11 points.

Will Burke paced the Hornets to a five-point win over Wayzata with a third-place run of 16 minutes, 11.9 seconds as Matt Lumbar took seventh in 16:22.1 and Jake Campbell placed 10th in 16:28.8. Luke Lumbar (16:38.6) and Matthew Berntson (17:01.9) earned crucial 14th and 23rd place finishes to help push Edina to victory.

Boys Soccer

Jens Undlin and Arin Arpinar both scored for second-seeded Edina in a 2-0 victory over No. 7 Minnetonka in the opening game of the Section 2AA Tournament.

Goalkeeper Nathan Rousey made five saves in the victory as the Hornets advanced to a Saturday semifinal matchup at home against third-seeded Eden Prairie on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Girls Soccer

The third-seeded Edina girls soccer team won its Section 2AA Tournament opener 3-0 against No. 6 seed Shakopee.

Individual statistics were not available. Edina plays at No. 2 seed Eden Prairie at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Girls Cross-Country

Piper Bain's fifth-place finish of 15:21.5 led the Edina girls cross-country team to a No. 3 placement at the Lake Conference championship meet.

Tate Sweeney (15:47.3) took 11th, Molly Suhs (15:48.6) placed 13th, Bridgit Loeffelholz (15:51.6) came in 18th and McKenzie Lee (15:54.9) was 20th.

Volleyball

The Edina volleyball team lost its Lake finale on Thursday, falling 3-2 to visiting Hopkins to drop to fourth place in the conference standings with a 2-6 circuit record.

The Hornets, 18-9-1 overall, close out the regular season versus visiting East Ridge next Tuesday night.
