(thenevadaindependent.com) — Reno residents are seeing more housing pushed into wildfire-prone hillsides as city and county leaders approve projects like Moose Ridge and Sierra Reflections despite recent nearby fires. Local fire officials, economists, and researchers explain how limited flat land, tax incentives, and state insurance rules are driving growth into high-risk areas, and what building codes and mitigation efforts can—and can't—do to protect neighborhoods.
   

2. The 1701 Group celebrates new philanthropic support center, expanded thrift store (mynews4.com) — One of Reno's most popular thrift stores, The 1701 Group on Vassar Street, has opened a new 6,400‑square‑foot Philanthropic Support Center to expand its programs. The larger space will house Clothes for Kids and a new food pantry, helping volunteers deliver groceries to about 400 people each month and better support local children, veterans and families in need.
   

3. This Is Reno wins 16 top Nevada Press Association awards (thisisreno.com) — Reno's own independent outlet This Is Reno just picked up 16 Nevada Press Association awards, including podcast of the year and multiple first-place honors for investigative and accountability reporting. Their work on radon at the downtown courthouse, tenant conditions, public transit dissatisfaction and criminal justice issues shows how sustained local journalism can surface problems that directly affect Reno residents.
   

4. Officer Uses a Shovel To Rescue Trapped Skunk and Deserves a Medal for Bravery (thestate.com) — A Reno police officer turned an unusual station visitor into a feel‑good moment by carefully freeing a skunk that wandered into the department's motor pool with its head stuck in a jar. Using a shovel and plenty of distance, the officer avoided getting sprayed, while wildlife experts remind residents to secure trash so animals don't get trapped in discarded containers.
