Blizzard Coming to NH on Sunday: Weather Alert

Breaking: Forecasters issued a winter storm watch through Monday; up to 2 feet of snow; wind gusts up to 45 mph; midweek storm possible.

GRAY, ME — The National Weather Service has issued both winter storm watch and hazardous weather outlook alerts for New Hampshire as a blizzard is expect to move into the region on Feb. 12, dumping as much as 24 inches of snow upon the state. The latest alert was issued at 8:20 a.m. on Saturday and stays in place until noon on Monday.

“A Weak area of low pressure and a surface trough over the Gulf of Maine will produce a general light snowfall for today,” according to the alert. “Strong low pressure will then likely develop in the Gulf of Maine Sunday and Monday possibly providing the region with a heavy snowfall along with gusty winds.”

The heavy snow will likely mix with rain for a short time on Sunday afternoon and during the evening on the Seacoast, according to the alert. Accumulations will be anywhere from 12 to 18 inches, according to the NWS.

AccuWeather.com, however, is predicting 12 to 24 inches of show across the entire state, according to a post online.

“The intensity of the snow will make it difficult for road crews to keep roads clear,” their forecasters stated. “Travel will be dangerous, if not impossible, during the height of the storm.”

Timeline

The timeline for the storm is on Sunday morning, between 10 and 11 a.m. in Concord, Bedford, Amherst, Merrimack, Milford, and Nashua, with the snow turning heavy times in the afternoon, in Londonderry, Salem, and Windham, and other parts of the state. The snow will be blown about by strong winds at times, with higher gusts expected in Exeter, Hampton, North Hampton, and Portsmouth, after the snow begins to fall between 1 and 3 p.m. on Sunday.

“Some power outages possible due to heavy wet snow where temperatures remain near 32 degrees and where rain mixes in near the coast,” the alert noted.

The storm is expected to taper off between 9 and 10 a.m. on Monday.

Winds will be out of the northeast, from 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph, with temps in the mid-20s for most of the day. Expect low visibility, the alert noted.

AccuWeather.com also warned of another large system in the middle of the week, offering two scenarios, depending on whether or not storms merged along the Northeast corridor.
