Blustery Weather Knocks Out Power To Tens Of Thousands In New Hampshire

The state's 4 major utility companies are working to restore power to around 19,000 customers after more than 20,000 lost power Wednesday.

CONCORD, NH — Tens of thousands of utility customers lost power on Wednesday night after two sweeping storms brought blustery winds and a deluge of rain to central and southern New Hampshire.

Wind gusts of up to 45 mph were reported all around the state, with the strongest winds occurring between 5 and 8 p.m. Tree branches were reported down, and alarm activations were reported all over Concord and the capital region. Wires were reported down on West Parish Road in Concord, in the area of Flagg Road in Loudon, Ashuelot Drive in Washington, and near Pine Street in Hopkinton. A tree also fell on a home on Longmeadow Drive in Concord, while a house fire was also reported in Goshen.

As of 8:30 p.m., about 19,000 customers were still without power, including more than 12,000 Eversource customers, 5,000 New Hampshire Electric Co-Op customers, more than 1,500 Unitil customers, and a few hundred Liberty Utility customers.

Unitil reported outages in Concord and the capital region as well as the Seacoast.

In Concord, more than 250 customers are without power, while less than 250 are without power in Boscawen. Smaller outages were reported in Allenstown, Bow, Canterbury, Chichester, and Epsom. Restoration times range from midnight to 8 a.m.

On the Seacoast, outages were reported in Atkinson, Danville, and Exeter. Restoration times were also running from 10 p.m. to 2:30 a.m., or the company is still assessing times.

Eversource reported more than 3,000 without power in Newport. Every other community ranged from dozens of outages to around 425. Outages were reported in Epsom, New Boston, Auburn, Brentwood, Hopkinton, Goffstown, Hudson, Windham, Canterbury, Weare, Warner, Loudon, Amherst, Merrimack, Pembrooke, and some Lakes Region communities, too.

The co-op reported dozens of outages, with most less than 800 customers. Most outages were reported in the northwest area of Merrimack County and the Lakes Region but also Brentwood, Danville, Kingston, and Andover.

Liberty reported only one outage in Salem and none in Windham. Most of the company’s outages were in western New Hampshire.
