City Official: Stay Off Concord Recreation Department Playing Fields

Despite the wonderful pre-spring weather, community athletic fields are still closed and will be until April, the parks director says.

CONCORD, NH — The city of Concord reminds residents that, despite the balmy March temperatures, community athletic fields in Concord are still closed.

The fields are closed due to wet conditions — some fields are still very wet and muddy, not only due to the snow melt but also recent rain.

David Gill, the director of Concord Parks & Recreation, said, while everyone is excited to get outside and play, “we just need a few more weeks of warmer than normal temps.” The current conditions of the field “can create dangerous playing conditions” while also damaging the fields.

“City fields are typically open mid-to-late April through early November annually,” he said, “however this depends on weather and field conditions. If the weather continues to be warmer than normal, it appears our fields may be ready before mid-April (fingers crossed).”

Fields should not be played on when muddy, extremely wet, soft, or covered in frost since damage will occur. Ideally, Gill said, fields should not be used unless the grass is growing — to ensure the grass can recover from usage.
