CONCORD, NH — Between March 1 and March 8, eight people were arrested on various driving under the influence charges in the city.

Thomas H. Harrison, 75, of Concord was arrested at 10:03 p.m. on March 8 on a driving under the influence charge. According to an affidavit, around 9:30 p.m., police were sent to the Irving gas station for a report of a man in the parking lot who was "clearly impaired." Dispatch said a witness reported a bumper falling off the vehicle the man was driving and now, he was attempting to put it back on, the report said. The officer arrived, found the vehicle, a 2010 Volvo, parked diagonally in two spaces. A man, later identified as Harrison, was sitting in the front seat. "I asked Thomas what had happened," the officer wrote. "Thomas stated that he drove into the parking lot of the Irving and accidentally drove onto the berm of the southeast side of the parking lot." Once the vehicle was removed from the berm, the front bumper fell off, he was accused of saying. The officer noticed fluids were leaking from the Volvo. The officer accused Harrison of having glassy eyes and slurring his words as well as having slow speech. When reaching for his driver's license, "he struggled and appeared to be uncoordinated," the officer wrote. When asked about how much he had to drink that night, Harrison said, three to four beers at CC Tomatoes, the affidavit stated, while adding he wasn't sure how much exactly because he was talking with people. The officer also spoke to a witness about what happened and they reiterated the same scenario Harrison had, the report said. After field sobriety tests, Harrison was arrested and held without bail.

Anestis Spiro Karathanasis, 43, of Concord was arrested at 5:46 a.m. on March 7 on driving under the influence, possession of a controlled drug, breach of bail, and resisting arrest or detention charges. Police were sent to Clinton Street near Exit 2 on Interstate 89 for a report of a man passed out inside a Ford Explorer that was in the middle of the road facing the wrong way of traffic. When the officers arrived, they found the vehicle "completely in the travel lane with four tires between the yellow center line and the white fog line," according to an affidavit. The officers woke the driver, Karathanasis, up, and spoke with him. The reporting officer accused him of saying he thought it was a good place to park and close his eyes, according to an affidavit. While speaking with him, Karathanasis denied drinking or taking substances but the officer noted "pinpoint pupils" even though he was in a dark section of the road. After field sobriety tests, Karathanasis was arrested. However, officers accused him of tensing up and pulling away when they tried to handcuff him. After a brief struggled, he was contained, the officer wrote. After searching Karathanasis, the officer accused him of being in possession of two small plastic bags of a crystal substance believed to be methamphetamine inside of a soft container in his sweatshirt pocket. Karathanasis, it turned out, was out on bail after being arrested in Bedford for meth possession on Dec. 27, 2020. According to a report from the Merrimack police, he was also arrested on stalking and breach of bail charges in that community on Dec. 27, 2020. According to superior court documents, Karathanasis was convicted on a forgery charge out of Hooksett in February 2001, forgery charges out of Concord in February 2001, June 2003, and March 2006, felon in possession of a dangerous weapon out of Hopkinton in March 2006, and robbery charges out of Nashua in January 2012. Karathanasis is due back in Merrimack County Superior Court on a dispositional conference on May 26.
