CONCORD, NH — The superintendent of the Concord School District said she was shocked and disappointed after the city’s middle school was burglarized and vandalized during the early morning hours Monday.

Kathleen Murphy, the superintendent of SAU 8, said the classes were canceled due to police investigation work as well as repairs that needed to be made at the school. Three classrooms and two administrative offices were damaged during the incident.

There was also graffiti reported inside the school, but none was racist or racially related, like the incident in Hopkinton Sunday. The graffiti was tagged in the administrators’ offices, she said.

“Concord police are continuing to gather evidence of the break-in,” she said. “They are reviewing video tape and other identifiable pieces of evidence. I’m leaving that up to them right now. (They are also) looking at all of the areas that were vandalized.”

Murphy said it would have been difficult for investigators to complete their work with classes in session, hence the cancelation. Maintenance staffers and school staff, too, spent the morning cleaning up the school. Windows were being replaced in both rooms and offices at the school. Teachers were also creating a list of items that may be missing.

The costs for all the repairs and lost wage time were unknown at post time.

While there has been vandalism, graffiti, threats, and other issues at Concord schools, there has not been anything like this for quite a while, leading to concern from Murphy.

“I’m really disappointed that these people intruded into student’s learning environment,” she said. “It’s disappointing. And we have no idea what motivated the event. But we’ll look at this and try and understand what precipitated this kind of vandalism. It’s disappointing.”
