CONCORD, NH — One of the teens from Concord involved with a collision in Stoddard has died from injuries sustained in the crash on Thursday.

Kelsey Mayer, 18, of Concord, who graduated from Concord High School last year and was attending Keene State College, was driving a Chevrolet Cruze when it crashed into a logging truck on Route 9 at the highway’s intersection with Route 123 at just before 5 a.m. She was taken to Concord Hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries and later succumbed to injuries.

A second teenager, Allison Yanski, 19, who is a sophomore at KSC, was also injured in the crash. She was taken to Cheshire Medical Center with serious but not life-threatening injuries, state police said.

Concord High School had counselors available to students in classes on Friday after hearing about the accident.

“We understand that there may be students having a hard time processing this event and many other students who know the victims of the accident,” the school administration said. “We are certainly keeping the two graduates in our thoughts.”

The Equinox, the student newspaper at KSC, said the Stoddard Fire Department noted both women were trapped in the vehicle and “the extrication time was extensive.”

The school’s president, Melinda Treadwell, said, “Our thoughts, prayers, and love are with the students, their families, and all of their friends, as well as anyone else injured in the crash.” Counseling staffers at the college were also available at the wellness center on Friday.

Mayer’s aunt, Jen Albino, started a GoFundMe.com site with a $35,000 goal to offset the costs of medical bills and end-of-life planning.

“The world is a lot dimmer as we have lost a huge light in our lives,” she wrote. “She fought with all she had but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries. Kelsey was an amazing soul who loved passionately … Please continue to pray for my beautiful niece and her parents as we go through this.”

Updates

During the past 48 hours, the effort had raised more than $61,000 from more than 900 people toward a $100,000 goal.

Kathleen Murphy, the superintendent of SAU 8, the Concord School District, emailed students and parents on Saturday night to recognize Mayer for her contributions to the district — including playing soccer year-round while at Concord High School as well as her attendance at three schools in the district, Beaver Meadow, Rundlett Middle, and CHS.

“This year,” Murphy said, “she earned a spot on the Keene State College soccer team as a freshman. Along with her exceptional soccer skills, Kelsey was noted for her positive spirit and the joy she brought to those around her. Our deepest sympathies are extended to the entire Mayer family as well as to the many friends and teammates of Kelsey.”

Counselors will be available for CHS students seeking support on Monday.
