Police were sent to Hannaford Supermarket in on Oct. 24, 2015, for a report of a shoplifter that had fled the store.

Employees reported that a customer allegedly took two packages of meat and four desserts and placed them into a blue reusable shopping bag. The woman reportedly then made a fraudulent return with the same merchandise, receiving a store gift card for approximately $34. The female allegedly then used the gift card to purchase a case of bottled water, according to an employee at the store.

In late November, Lt. Timothy O’Malley, the commander of the department’s criminal investigations unit, put together Concord Regional Crimeline alert, requesting tips about the woman while including a surveillance screenshot from the store.

Crimeline tips came into the police department reportedly leading to Maines as a suspect. Police also learned that there were other warrants against Maines including a Merrimack County Superior Court warrant for failure to appear, $10,000 cash bail, violation of parole, and theft from a building by Portsmouth Police.

In late January, an officer was sent to South Street to conduct a follow-up investigation on a separate incident and while speaking to a resident, the officer asked about another woman in the apartment at the time. The resident stated that it was Maines. The officer knew that Maines had warrants but double-checked that they were still active and they were.

The resident let the reporting officer and a second officer into the apartment to take custody of Maines who was later found in the basement.

Maines was held on $10,000 cash bail and also had court dates set for Feb. 29, and March 7, for the other allegations.
