Explosion Reported At Homeless Camp Fire Under Concord Bridge: Watch

CONCORD, NH — Concord firefighters extinguished another homeless camp fire under the Water Street Bridge Sunday night.

Around 7:30 p.m., capital region dispatch received a call reporting an explosion under the bridge and a massive fire. Dispatch presumed the explosion was probably due to a propane tank.

Firefighters arrived from the Gas Street side of the bridge and confirmed “a good-sized fire.” Firefighters did not have access but requested more firefighters and a forestry unit to assist.

The second engine and forestry unit were directed toward Storrs Street while a tanker suggested running a water line from the bridge down to firefighters. A booster was used to get the water down to the firefighters.

Around 7:45 p.m., the fire commander confirmed water was on the fire. Firefighters with portable tanks also attacked the fire from the Gas Street side.

At just before 8 p.m., the bulk of the fire was knocked down and firefighters began overhauling the scene.

Around 8:30 p.m., the fire commander confirmed that the overhaul was finished and a primary search for the cause of the fire was complete. Firefighters were then sent back into service.

News 603 posted a video of the fire on Facebook.

Despite many interests attempting to clear the homeless camps from the Storrs Street area, the camps remain. Concord fire and rescue teams have been sent to fires in the area at least half a dozen times during the past few years.
