Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day

Saturday, September 26th at the Everett Arena from 9:00AM to 3:00PM.

Disposing of toxic materials in your trash, down the drain, or on the ground can seriously impact our environment and public health. Household hazardous wastes can contaminate septic tanks, wastewater treatment systems, ground water, and even our drinking water if not disposed of properly. Household hazardous wastes are leftover household products that are toxic, ignitable, corrosive, or reactive, such as – cleaners, paint, pesticides, adhesives, polishes, and fuels. Concord residents should bring their household hazardous waste to the City of Concord’s Household Hazardous Waste Day on Saturday, September 26, 2015 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Douglas N. Everett Arena, 15 Loudon Road.

Concord residents can bring up to 10 gallons or 20 pounds of household hazardous waste for safe disposal at Household Hazardous Waste Day. Acceptable items include items such as oil based paints (no latex paint), gasoline, transmission fluid, swimming pool chemicals, insecticides, fertilizers, and furniture cleaner. Decisions to accept or refuse material will be made on-site. Do not bring fluorescent bulbs, fire extinguishers, radioactive waste, industrial waste, ammunition, prescription medication, regular trash, or latex paint. Latex paint is not hazardous and can be disposed of in the regular trash when completely dried out.

Proof of Concord or Penacook residency is required (please bring your driver’s license, a utility bill, or something that will prove your residency). Safely transport household hazardous waste in your car by leaving materials in the original containers, tightening caps and lids, and packing containers in sturdy upright boxes to avoid spills. Never mix chemicals or smoke while handling hazardous waste.

Help minimize hazardous waste by only buying what you would use. Also seek alternative methods or products to reduce use of hazardous waste materials. Always read the product labels for information about proper disposal and special directions for storage. Excess materials should be carefully stored in a cool and dry location out of reach from children and animals. Product labels that read, “danger,” “poison,” “warning,” “flammable,” “reactive,” “corrosive,” “toxic,” or “caution” indicate that an item is a hazardous waste product. Even empty containers of used hazardous material are dangerous because of the residual chemicals that may remain.

All household hazardous materials need to be carefully disposed for public safety and to help protect our environment. Be sure to bring your household hazardous waste to the City of Concord’s Household Hazardous Waste Day on September 26th to do your part!
