NH Winter Storm Watch Alert: 12-18 Inches Of Snow Possible

Update: NWS raises ranges of potential snowfall amounts starting Monday night/Tuesday morning through Wednesday.

CONCORD, NH — Another storm is expected to come into the region on Monday night/Tuesday morning and bring heavy snow and wintry conditions throughout the state through Wednesday morning, according to alerts online. The National Weather Service issued an “winter storm warning” alert at 9 a.m. on March 12, 2018, warning of another coastal storm approaching Northern New England. The watch timeline runs through 8 a.m. on March 14.

Low pressure developing off the Carolina coast will move north, passing south and east of New England and into the Canadian Maritimes by Tuesday night," according to the latest alert. "Snow is expected to develop from south to north beginning late tonight in southern Maine and New Hampshire, reaching mid-coast and central Maine by early Tuesday morning. The snow will become heavy at times during the day Tuesday before beginning to taper off Tuesday night and early Wednesday."

The snowfall is expected to be "significant" for the entire state "but variations in the storm track are still possible," according to the alert.

"If the storm tracks further to the south, lower snowfall amounts would be expected, any shift in the storm track closer to southern New England would lead to greater snow totals for the region," forecasters added.

Total snow accumulations were expected to be in the 6 to 12 inch range Sunday morning, with locally higher amounts. But by afternoon, those totals were raised to 8 to 18 inches across southern New Hampshire. On Monday morning, they were raised slightly to 12 to 18 inches expected for nearly all of the Patch communities.

The storm timeline is expected to start between 11 p.m. and midnight in the western and southern part of the state while a 1 a.m. start time in Concord.

Forecasters have set up an experimental web link with a range – and percentages – of potential snowfall amounts.

The predictions range from “expected” snowfall amounts: About 11 inches in Concord, 13 inches in Nashua, and in that range for Amherst, Bedford, Merrimack, Milford, and Londonderry, to as much as 15 to 16 inches in Windham, Salem, Exeter, Hampton, North Hampton, and Portsmouth.

The NWS also reported that there is a 66 to 79 percent chance of the snowfall totals to be higher than 8 inches in Patch communities; with a 32 to 64 percent change that the storm will bring 12 inches or more. There is also a slim chance that the storm could be less than 6 inches.

Regardless of the storm amounts, forecasters warned to plan ahead for “difficult travel conditions, including during the evening commute on Tuesday."
