CONCORD, NH — A Rhode Island teen is being treated for injuries after crashing a stolen SUV on Interstate 89 after a high-speed chase on Sunday.

Around 2:45 p.m. on Sunday, New Hampshire State Police attempted to stop a Ford SUV with New York plates that was clocked on radar driving 113 mph after driving behind the cruiser and passing it. A chase then ensued, according to Sgt. Maurice Sampson of Troop D.

“The vehicle entered and exited I-89 at two different exits on I-89 north before the pursuit was terminated due to concerns for public safety,” he said. “Shortly after the pursuit was terminated, the suspect drove over a controlled tire deflation device which caused two of his tires to deflate.”

The driver then drove the SUV off the road near Mile Marker 48.2 and fled into the woods, Sampson said.

State police set up a perimeter and while doing so, learned the SUV was stolen in Rhode Island. A K-9 unit was deployed and it found the suspect — who also had an active warrant out of Rhode Island on a first-degree armed robbery charge.

Elijah K. Cadieux, 18, homeless in Rhode Island, was arrested and charged with being a fugitive from justice as well as receiving stolen property, reckless conduct, reckless driving, disobeying an officer, conduct after an accident, and resisting arrest charges.

“There are other possible charges pending for theft that are related to the license plate and some new merchandise that was found in the vehicle,” he said. “The case is still actively being investigated.”

Cadieux was taken to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon for examination and treatment of pre-existing conditions that were not related to the crash or arrest, Sampson said. After he is discharged, he will be held on preventive detention.
