Small Earthquakes Hit New Hampshire’s Lake Region, Nantucket: USGS

A 2.3 magnitude earthquake hit Lake Winnisquam on Saturday, while a 2.1 quake was reported near the popular Bay State island.

MEREDITH, NH — A small earthquake shook the Lakes Region on Saturday while another one hit an island in Massachusetts, according to the United States Geological Survey

On Saturday, a 2.1 magnitude earthquake struck the island of Nantucket in Massachusetts just before 10 a.m., about two miles from Jetties Beach. Its depth was 10.8 kilometers.

Around 11:30 p.m., also on Saturday, another earthquake hit New England. This one was on Black Brook Road near its intersection with Kaulback Road in Meredith, along the shores of Lake Winnisquam. Its depth was 6.4 km, according to the survey.

While never very large, earthquakes are becoming an irregular occurrence — with around a dozen happening in New Hampshire since 2020.

In late May, a 2.2 magnitude earthquake was reported in Wolfeboro. A 1.8 earthquake hit Canterbury in August 2021. A 2.1 earthquake was reported in Tilton in January 2020. Before those, earthquakes reported in Concord, Exeter, Salem, Hopkinton, Warner, Plymouth, Epsom, Nashua, Sanbornton, and East Kingston since 2012.
