CONCORD, NH — It’s that time of the year again when everyone is scrambling to get sweets for the sweethearts.

However, the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office is warning Granite Staters to be on the lookout for new romance scams. The state said there has been a flurry of romantic relationship romance scams where victims have been played on either social media or telephone by suiters attempting to gather personal information from potential victims.

Like with everything in life, if it is too good to be true, it probably is.

Signs that someone is attempting to scam you romantically include: A person provides too much personal information, too soon; they quickly try to lure you off a dating website or social media to communicate through text, email, or instant messaging; the person has poor spelling and grammar; they make excuses why you cannot meet in person; they claim to be living or traveling outside the United States (often claiming to be in the military or working on an “oil rig”); the person claims they are trapped abroad and need money to get back home; they request gift cards, cell phones, or cryptocurrency; or they say they have access to funds if you first provide them money or other property.

To keep from being a victim, limit info you share publicly, cease contacting if you suspect someone is scamming you, refuse to send money or give our personal info, and do not click on any links that are sent to you by potential scammers.

The state has a consumer protection hotline at 603-271-3641 where scams can be reported. It can also be done online with the Federal Trade Commission. Also, anyone who knows of a vulnerable adult being scammed or financially exploited should contact the New Hampshire Bureau of Elderly and Adult Services, at 1-800-949-0470.
