Arrest Made After Nashua Bounce House Goes Airborne, Seriously Injuring Toddlers

The horrifying mishap occurred Oct. 12, 2014 at Rickety Ranch.

An owner of a Nashua ranch has been arrested in connection with a horrifying incident last year when an untethered bounce house flew 50 feet in the air and came crashing down—seriously injuring two toddlers.

Gary Bergeron, 61, of Hollis, was charged with three misdemeanors following an investigation by the state Fire Marshal. Hillsborough County prosecutors previously reviewed the case but declined to press charges. He owns Rickety Ranch at Sullivan Farm in Nashua.

Authorities said on Oct. 12, two boys aged 2 and 3, respectively, climbed into the ranch’s bounce house, which was not open to the public. A gust of wind blew the house 50 feet in the air with the children inside and it landed about 100 feet from its original spot.

The boys were seriously injured but have since recovered.

The Fire Marshal on Monday said Bergeron was charged with failure to register the bounce house, failure to obtain an amusement park decal, and failure to have an inspection—all misdemeanors.

Fire Marshal J. William Degnan said bounce house injuries are a daily sight at emergency rooms.

“These injuries occur at not only public venues, but are occurring at the home as well,” Degnan said in a statement. “Because children are the end users, parents should be familiar with the risks and dangers and should receive proper supervision instruction.”
